Bring Back Steve LeVeille

As you probably know by now, WBZ/CBS Radio fired Steve LeVeille and replaced him with a syndicated show. WBZ/CBS gave no warning of the change, and they did not let Steve sign off on the air. Morgan White, Jr--a fine radio host in his own right--was filling in for Steve the night the decision was leaked, and it was Morgan who concluded the final Steve LeVeille Broadcast with a tearful call from Generosa, a loyal WBZ caller for decades. Dan Rea and Jordan Rich, the remaining talk-show hosts at the station, were instructed not to address the changes on air, as if the local listeners would not notice the changes. No announcement about the change was made by management on the air or on wbz.com. Steve's face was promptly removed from the website, and WBZ cancelled the domain name of Steve's personal website (radiosteve.com; fortunately it remains accessible at http://www.geocities.com/~radiosteve/). They did their best effort at making Steve disappear.

The Steve LeVeille Broadcast was replaced by the newly syndicated Overnight America, hosted by Jon Grayson out of St. Louis. It was touted by Jordan as a show that will continue to be local and relevant to Bostonians because it is only broadcast in four select markets: Boston, Pittsburgh, Minneapolis, and St. Louis. Jon, however, clearly stated that he wishes to expand the show as much as possible, and his intentions of hosting a nationwide show are obvious. He has no connection to the Boston area, as was painfully obvious when he touted living in upstate New York and Delaware as reasons making him relevant to Boston.

I have nothing against Jon Grayson. He seems like a fine host for a market like St. Louis. I listened for a couple of hours, and was surprised at his choice of topics for his "inaugural show". One would think that a host would spend some real time thinking of topics for the first night of a brand new radio show. Grayson's first topic was drunk driving, based on some report he had just heard in the news. Whatever his thesis about drunk driving was, I don't remember, as it was either really short or really obvious (or both). Callers took it in whatever direction they chose, and it ended up being a pointless discussion topic.

The second topic was about monkey meat. Yes...monkey meat. Enough said. I fell asleep after that.

I didn't want to have to make a point about Boston callers having a bit more, uh, shall we say, intelligence than their counterparts in the mid-west, as expected from this conceited and proud Bostonian. Fortunately, I don't have to. Callers from the other regions--except for the few blatant rednecks I heard--were mildly entertaining. Jon didn't need to announce where a caller was from, as you could figure it out based on the accent within a sentence or two. Jon's choice of topics and the conversation he contributed, however, made him sound intellectually little more than the average caller.

I, for one, do not plan on becoming a regular listener of Overnight America. The combination of the way Steve was discourteously removed from the station and Grayson's lack of fit for the Boston market is too much for this listener.

From what I heard, Grayson was unapologetic and unsympathetic to the callers lamenting the disappearance of Steve. In the telephone conversation with him before the show started, Jordan tried repeatedly to get him to express that he understands we just lost a local voice in Steve. Grayson foolishly refused to address it, and sounded painfully confident that we would instantly approve of his voice being heard during the Steve LeVeille Broadcast. On his show, callers, fortunately, let him know what they thought--not of Grayson--but of "pig-headed management" that made the changes. Grayson quickly (and smoothly) hung up when callers got that far in their short-lived rant. Grayson again was unapologetic, and told listeners to take it up with WBZ management. He distanced himself from WBZ on that issue. WBZ, for their part, advertised Grayson's show as "WBZ's Overnight America", as if Grayson were broadcasting from 1170 Soldiers Field Rd.

What would I like WBZ to do? I think that's obvious if you've read this far. Bring back someone who listens to callers, and doesn't hang up on them after a few sentences while pretending to thank them for their call. Bring back someone whose premier discussion topic is not monkey meat. Bring back New England's local voice. Bring back someone who knows where Boston is. Bring back someone who knows what Chowdah is. Bring back the one link to WBZ's legendary past hosts. Bring back grass-roots efforts that can lower our gas prices, or retire Johnny Pesky's number. Bring back LeVeille-palooza. Bring back Tagliabue. And Binswanger, too. Bring back Max. Bring back Mel Simons. Bring back Generosa.

Bring back Steve LeVeille.

  1. WBZ is owned by CBS. CBS is owned primarily by Sumner Redstone, who lives just a few miles from WBZ, at 98 Baldpate Hill Road in Newton.

So if Steve Leveille's fans (and Lovell Dyett's, for that matter) want to stage a loud and public media event and deliver lots of petitions to someone local who might react to them .....

  2. I will be permanently changing my radio dial from WBZ. Not only was Steve LeVeille a welcome voice at home, but was invaluable when I have been driving late at night up and down the east coast. I will no longer be waking up to WBZ news, either, because my dial will be changed. I can do without the early news reports, though I was glad to get them first thing in the morning. Now I will just wait for the newspaper! LeVeille was a link to WBZ's great past as Boston's most powerful station. He was in the long tradition of Larry Glick & Norm Nathan. As another erstwhile listerner put it, what a waste of WBZ's powerful signal having more syndicated programming!

  3. I am also changing my radio settings. I've written several times to WBZ and CBS Radio, as well as some of WBZ's overnight sponsors, who just might want to know how we all feel. I contacted Farrell Volvo (farrellvolvo.com), the Law Offices of Spano & Dawicki (caringlaw.com), Kantrovitz & Associates (masswc.com), and Jordan's Furniture (jordansfurniture.com)-- there's contact info at each of those websites. If WBZ and CBS only care about the money, maybe going directly to the sponsors will get their attention. What other local businesses sponsor the overnight show?

  9. I can't say it wasn't expected at some point. CBS just doesn't want to pay anyone (salary/pension liability) anymore, for anything other than drive-time.

I'm not even angry, because things have changed forever and it's out of everyone's hands.

+ Grayson sounds like a higher pitched Limbaugh by the way.

  10. This is great info - I was hoping someone would start putting a list of sponsers together. I will be writing to all of these and more shortly.

I as well will never put WBZ on again in my home, car or internet stream at any hour of the day or night until they reverse these bonehead changes.

  13. Has anyone noticed that not one single caller to Jon Grayson has been able to say "thank you for taking my call" or "goodbye?" He cuts them off when he thinks the "conversation" is over. A few months ago, on the night before Steve L went onto the FM station to play his clarinet for Keith Lockhart, Steve made the point that often times a caller will have to say "are you there Steve" because he is listening, waiting.

I too changed the prsets on my car and will not listen to BZ. The best idea in this blog is to contact the advertisers. I will be doing so immediately.

The utter barbarity of the way this was done appalls me.

  14. Wonderfull ideas, letting the sponsers that now advertise on the "Overnight America" show know that they aren't advertising on a 'local' station anymore. I listened the 1st night Jon was on (in shock) and I suppose I should give him a chance, but I don't want to. I don't think Steve could come back after what CBS has done to him, would you? Maybe Steve could lease air time on a local station (WLYN), except his coverage would be so small (WLYN is only 900 watts, but at least Generosa could hear him. I guess I'm upset. Then the paper said "black leaders protest Lovell's layoff" (fireing) and want him reinstated. Like Steve, could he really go back? CBS has removed what was left of a local voice. My radio preset button #1 is no longer being used. Sorry for rambeling....

  15. C'mon guys. Steve will be missed but give the new show a chance, just as we did when Steve replaced Bob Rahleigh. The loss of the local flavor with pertinent news/weather/traffic teases is the biggest negative. I don't understand why WBZ made this disconnection from the local market and listener-ship, but I'm going to give the new show and its host a couple of weeks before deciding where my dial will be set in the early AM.

Thanks Steve; it was a very nice 9+ years. Good luck in the future.

  17. To the other Anonymous, Bob Raleigh wasn't unceremoniously dumped by 'BZ like Steve was. He announced his retirement weeks prior to his final show and people were allowed to call in and say good-bye. And unlike Steve, BZ listeners got a local talk-show host to replace Bob, not some syndicated tripe like we're getting now. This whole thing is a steaming pile of bovine excrement.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Imagine tuning into the Steve replacement during a major snowstorm...no info...with steve we could hear the plow drivers calling in and our neighbors calling to tell about the storm out their way....what a loss to us all...and life without Mel Simons will be rough..goodbye WBZ...you stink

    ReplyDelete
  19. I agree that the loss of the local flavor is a big negative -- that's what I was trying to say when I said that it was puzzling to understand why WBZ gave that up, but I'd hesitiate to call the replacement "tripe" on the strength of two broadcasts.

You're right about Bob Raleigh. He had the opportunity to choose his departure and to graciously say goodbye, but that's apparently not the norm for radio. As a matter of fact, if you heard Monday's inaugural show, you might have heard a caller from Minneapolis relating that the same thing happened to their overnight hosts, right down to the inability of them to bid goodbye to their loyal listeners.

I listened to Bob Raleigh from 1981 and when he departed, I missed his style, but I gave Steve a fair shot and learned to enjoy him too. Granted, in that case they retained the local link, and I wish that if a replacement was in the works, WBZ would've replaced Steve with a local voice, but they didn't. I also wish they had allowed him to at least come back for a final farewell broadcast, but they didn't do that either. So now we all have to make a choice and move on. I'm willing to give the new show some time before opting out or staying put. After all, even with Steve, the broadcast reached 37 other states and the best provinces of Canada. Surely they weren't all devoted Boston-area aficionados but they found a way to adopt his show.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I've listened to WBZ since 1959. They have had, over the years, some of the best radio talent in the country. This was done in a fashion that can not have sat well with the local management. It is obviously coporate driven. If I were considering a career in broadcasting, I would pay particular attention.
It is interesting that to get local coverage, the future is in satellite radio.
WBZ will no longer be on any of my presets.
Sponsors, pay attention. When Dick Summers and Steve go on satellite, I will be in line for my new radio. Bernie, Jim Farrell, Wildcat, etc. I am now deaf to you.
Good luck and thank you Steve and please let us know how and when.

  21. I don't live in Boston. I don't even live within commuting distance to Boston but I do live in Massachusetts and 'BZ was the only MA station I could tune into and hear relatively local (state) topics discussed. Or have a working knowledge of some of the places they discussed from trips there. There are no radio stations out here (Western MA) that have local, live talk shows that can be picked up over air. I've been listening to 'BZ since I was in my early teens because it was the only place I could hear Bruins games. I adapted to the leaving of Larry Glick and Bob Raleigh (who got me through many an overnight shift at work) and the loss of Norm Nathan. But none of them were broadcasting out of St. Louis. There was nothing that I heard over the past two nights that engaged me enough to stay tuned.

A question though. If WBZ/CBS were trying to cut payroll, wouldn't it actually cost more to have a nationally syndicated show?

    ReplyDelete
  22. Like most of the comments I agree with the idea of a list of advertisers to contact. I work nights and was listening to WBZ from the time I left my house at 2pm. until I got home which is usually between 3am. and 5am. Steve made driving during the overnight enjoyable and the local info was always helpful. I listened to the new show for a while the past two nights and am very dissapointed in WBZ/CBS's choice of programing. WBZ would be very lucky if Steve wre given the chance to return to the airways and he accepted. After such a HUGE!!!(UGE!) slap in the face I'm sure it would be hard for him to return but maybe just maybe he'd do it for the love of his family of loyal listeners.

say, "Thanks for the call, goodnight now"?

I remember a couple years back witnessing a big explosion which turned out to be the Danversport chemical factory. Was on way home; no way of knowing what happened, though I did find one radio station where local people called in and reported what was going on,
where it was, etc. The station? WBZ. The
    show? The Steve Leveille broadcast.

What happens if something like that happens again, or a big snowstorm, or any event?
WBZ will be running a show off "the bird"
(satellite) and giving US the bird.

  32. I haven't seen a thing about what this show's ratings were. Not ratings from his band of followers but market share ratings. I bet they were pretty dismal. Why else would a broadcast that reached 38 states and parts of Canada have the same few callers, week in and week out? Wake up and smell the coffee, folks. This isn't about the emotional needs of a few, it's about running a business. And the boycott won't work. It takes people in numbers, not a few paper deliverers, truck drivers, and retired folks.

    ReplyDelete
  33. And, I'm not trying to slam paper deliverers, truck drivers, and retired folks. I just think that most businesses would like to direct their advertising dollars toward demographic groups that are likely to have a lot of disposable income.

  35. I agree, Steve had the same few boring callers week in and week out and the show was getting pretty tired. The fellow living in his parents basment with the speech impediment who called him "Steven" and was planning to vote for Ba-wahk Obama. Angelo, the immigrant doughnut maker who while on hold regularly walked away from the phone until Steve called his name, then during the 30 seconds it took him to come back to the phone Steve played music. Genarosa from Peabody. LeVeille lacked the talent of Larry Glick, Lou Marcell and his own predecessor Bob Raleigh. As a result, the great callers like Weldon, Wolfie and Varie never called Steve. Come to think of it, regarding the complaints about Grayson not being sympathetic to Steve, I always noticed LeVeille never once raised Bob Raleigh's name and when a caller would, he had nothing good to say about him. It's called karma.

  37. Sent to 'BZ sales, plus some hosts, plus a number of sponsors. 'BZ apparently knew better than to put an e-mail address down for its "management."

    - - - - - - -

WBZ should be ashamed of itself. Please place in public file.

No offense to you, Dan, but I was really shocked and disgusted to realize that WBZ has decided to throw away Steve Leveille and Lovell Dyett like used Kleenex. A native Bostonian (Dan, you were a year behind me at Latin School), I now stay in Silver Spring, Maryland, where radio reception in my apartment building is very poor but I can at least get WBZ in my car evenings and nights. But while I may continue to try to listen to Dan from time to time, otherwise there's no reason at all to try to listen to WBZ except for Jordan Rich and Morgan White Jr., and perhaps, for the weather and traffic when I drive back home. Why on earth would I or anyone else bother?

Kim Komando has a great show -- but who do you think would be listening to a computer show on tape-delay on a weekend night?

And with respect to "Jon Grayson"? Apart from the fact that he has no connection to New England, there are enough local and pseudo-local supporters of war criminals on the radio that there is no need to have yet another syndicated out-of-town spokesperson for the people who brought us two wars and the worst economic situation since the Great Depression.

It's really too too bad. The other night, Morgan White Jr. had a trivia contest on WBZ history, which clearly attracted a very large number of listeners. But clearly it is of no concern at all to WBZ's mismanagement that it has had a lot of loyal listeners over decades. And it's been pretty rare that Steve Laveille seemed to be begging for calls. I don't agree with Pat Desmarais' politics, but that's OK -- he's certainly got a right to his opinion, even if it's mostly wrong.

I have no idea whether your sponsors also advertise on Coast-to-Coast, which is also syndicated but which does have much greater credibility even in its bizarreness and which will certainly pick up its listenership. But if they don't, they might as well.
It's really a shame that your mismanagement has decided to run WBZ into the ground, after more than 75 years of service to the public. It may not be too late for you to repent. But I won't be listening to find out.

    ReplyDelete
  38. So, let me get this straight. WBZ made a decision that they felt would benefit their business, and it was their decision to make. Now some people are disappointed. Outlandish!

    ReplyDelete
  39. Although no one wants to see another person lose their job, especially under such seemingly thoughtless circumstances, perhaps a little perspective is called for. I looked over Steve's chronology of his career as posted on his website. His stint at WBZ as host of the Steve LeVeille Broadcast was the longest full-time position he held in a 30+ year professional career. He served as host of a five-hour talk show, five days a week, on the same station, in the same market, for over nine years. Can you reasonably expect more than that in a broadcasting career, especially in today's radio environment? Despite the unceremonious end, I'll bet that's more success than a great majority of talk show personalities have achieved. He had a good run. That kind of contribution should be applauded rather than lamented. Good job, Steve! I hope you find another position as enduring as this was, and soon. I also hope that you'll keep us informed via your website. Good luck, and thanks.

  55. When this whole thing started, I was just so saddened that I didn't even want to search the Internet for any news about Steve. But I immediately wrote WBZ a snail mail letter with email copies to CBS Radio saying that the first preset on my radio, WBZ, had gone dark and would remain so. I invited WBZ to inform me in writing, by email, or by phone when they resumed live, local overnight talk. Only then would I be prepared to use the first preset on my radio again.

Once they got the message thanks to all of you, I again wrote WBZ, expressing my thanks and informing them that I was able to awaken my radio, to WBZ.
